Asagaya Anime Street

Nakano's “Nakano Broadway” is already famous for manga, anime and figures, but in Asagaya as well there is now an “Anime street”; a whole street (more or less) dedicated to anime and j-pop culture. It's still quite small but there are anime themed cafes -for example a café where the waiters/waitresses are aspiring to become voice actors!- cosplay shops, anime art galleries and such. What I really love about this place, though, is the clever use of the space; Suginami-ku had this unused space underneath the train track between Asagaya and Koenji and decided to dedicate it to Anime! How awesome is that!? That's Japan for you! It's a bit out of the way I guess if you're on a short visit with a tight schedule, but if you're in the area checking out Nakano Broadway and have some time to spare it's super close. So don't forget to drop by Asagaya Anime Street – it's definitely worth a visit!

Asagaya Shinmeigu

Asagaya Shinmeigu is a lovely shrine really close to Asagaya station. I really like the stone Torii (temple gate) as a contrast to the more common red version.
As is customary when you visit a shrine I had a Omikuji – a fortune. You pay 100 yen and get to draw a stick with a number on it and the number gives you your fortune written on a neat piece of paper (which makes a great souvenir by the way). My fortune was somewhere in the middle – not really good and not really bad, either. But to be on the safe side, I tied it on a tree provided in the compound as you usually do with bad fortunes. As I did so, however, I accidentally ripped it – probably a bad sign for the future...
But in general you don't have to walk far to find a shrine or a temple in Japan; even in a metropolis like Tokyo. They are great havens of calm in the middle of the city wherever you are, like entering another world. The contrast of a shrine next to a skyscraper kind of summarizes Japan; a land of contrasts, high tech and ancient, standing side by side.

Fishing Pond "Suzuki-en"

So you can go fishing in Tokyo! And in the most unexpected places! We were planning to go fishing in Wadabori park but as it was closed we found another fishing spot only 1 or 2 minutes' walk from Asagaya station! No park attached! Just fishing! Who would have known!? I found it fascinating since I've been going past that particular spot every day for at least 2 years and had no idea I was right next to a fishing spot. Tokyo is indeed a town of surprises. For a small sum of 600 yen for an hour you can try out fishing for goldfish or bigger fish depending on the pond. We spotted a family with kids, as well as a businessman or two (probably skipping work) and caught a goldfish each. Very cute!
Supposedly you can take them home with you – not for eating though, mind you – but it seemed a shame and they were released again into their relative wildness. Thank you Goldfish! Hope it was not too much of a traumatic experience for you...

Panda coffee ten

Japan is the land of theme cafés; cats, owls, rabbits, cosplayers, maids, butlers... whatever you fancy really. But I really love Asagaya Panda Kissaten – a coffee shop entirely dedicated to pandas (not real ones, mind you).
Here you will find A LOT of pandas – pandas on the walls, panda goods, a panda in your coffee foam, a panda drawn on you omuraisu (rice omelet)...
Even where you wouldn't expect it there will be a panda – such as a tiny tiny chocolate panda hidden in your ice cafe au lait. It's very cute and quaint, the staff is nice and friendly, a perfect place to take guests visiting.
The lunch menu is quite cheap too; you get a meal such as curry, omuraisu or sandwiches along with a drink for about 1000 yen. They even have their own Panda cafe souvenirs such as keyrings, notes etc. All with pandas!

Asagaya Pearl Center

In the west it seems the trend is generally huge shopping malls gradually taking over and replacing small local shops, so it's refreshing to see that old, small shopping streets are still going strong in Japan. Every station seems to have their own shoutengai – shopping street – with small local shops displaying everything from traditional sweets to the newest cell phones.
We went for a stroll in Asagaya Pearl Center - a homely shopping street that might not display the most fashionable of shops but has its own secret hidden treasures.
For example I learned that the famous Tokyo Banana Omiyage (a banana shaped sponge cake popularized as THE Tokyo souvenir) was originally from the shop in this area!
But I was most impressed when I stumbled across a second hand shop for Kimonos, Yukata and traditional Japanese accessories to go with them. They had Kimonos for 2000 yen! And obi for 100 yen! So cheap! It is said that kimonos are expensive, but I guess that depends on where you’re looking. Everything in this shop was in almost perfect condition, too!
