Nishi-Ogikubo: Plastic Models, Noodles, and Animation

For the final Suginami Foreigners' Walk in fall, Greg and new Korean friend Kyungnam Kim headed to Nishi-Ogikubo. Kyungnam is currently a high school student but has been in Japan since first grade in elementary school, so he is perfectly fluent in Japanese. On top of that, he volunteers for the Non-Profit Organization called Hopemaker, and has a lot of knowledge about both Japan and Korea.

Plastic Models of Now and Then

Nakama Model Center is a place that really stands out in Nishi-Ogikubo. They have all kinds of models including airplanes, trains, cars, and even robots! We talked to the store owner, Mr. Amano, and we learned he has been running the store for 30 years in the same location. At first there were many other model shops in this location along the Chuo Line, but it seems only Nakama remains. When entering the store, it feels as though it hasn't changed much at all from over 30 years ago-- there are all sorts of models from the time when the store opened-- only now they are more rare and collectible. You can really see the history of models here.
Greg Mudarri, U.S.A.

With numbers of stores of this kind dropping, a plastic model store like Nakama is an incredibly rare find. Perhaps one can find lower prices through a consumer electronics wholesaler-- but that is not the point-- at Nakama Models you can get rare things you cannot easily obtain elsewhere, and there might be a really good find!! The obvious recommendation, however, is the model fighter planes. From the oldest that aren't made anymore to the newest models, you can find it all there.

Plenty of Delicious Udon!! since 2002

For lunch we went to an Udon restaurant called Tonya, where you can choose between white noodles or black noodles. It was really delicious, and it's a lot of food so you really get your money's worth. We ate a lot! I went for the Pork Miso Special with white udon (\1,300) while Kyungnam chose the popular regular Pork Miso Udon with black noodles (\900). The white udon noodles are the usual kind, but the `black` ones are more like soba noodles and aren't as soft as the white noodles. At Tonya, the taste and atmosphere are very Japanese and I wholly recommend it.
Greg Mudarri, U.S.A.

I've heard a lot about this Udon place, Tonya. When looking at the menu the first thing you will realize is that the portions are huge. Then when I got the real thing, I thought it was still even bigger than I expected. The thick noodles were not only in great amounts but also were very solid and filling. Slurping them was tough. After finishing the meal I remember my chin even hurt a little...the delicious chicken broth is also worth enjoying so I fully recommend the full experience.
Oh, and I almost forgot-- you can choose between black and white udon noodles!!

Learn About Animation in Suginami!

NMy interest in Japan didn't necessarily originate from anime, but I have always loved animation since my interest in Disney as a young child. If you want to experience many perspectives of animation in Japan, you should definitely check out the Suginami Animation Museum. There is much to enjoy and be fascinated by there.
Greg Mudarri, U.S.A.

This is a museum where you can learn about both the process of making animation and the history of Japanese animation. Here you can actually try adding your own sound/voice-overs to animation, so for the enthusiast it is well worth the trip. The upper floor has an updated gallery space and a library where you can peruse DVDs and manga to your heart's content. Especially those families with children, how about going together?

After enjoying 3 really great places in Nishi-Ogikubo.

After enjoying 3 really great places in Nishi-Ogikubo, we started to head back to the station. On the way we talked about a lot of interesting cultural things and Japan in general. We came across a home with a big yard and the typical `white picket fence` that one commonly thinks of as American style, and I really thought it seemed rare for Japan. If it was America it would have been bigger still, but at the same time I found it very interesting and quaint.

We also talked about what we thought was surprising since moving to Japan. Kyungnam and I both agreed that Japanese schools all having swimming pools was very surprising. In our countries it seems only a few private schools might have swimming pools.

All in all, it was a very interesting time spent for us foreigners in Suginami. Thanks for reading !
